Yes. Thematic Unity is a scored dimension; reviewers check whether each section feels necessary to a single argument. Without a traceable through-line, the essay scores low even if individual stories are strong.

No — the Implicit Self-Portrait theme explicitly penalizes declared traits. Competencies like compassion must be shown through narrated behavior; naming them without evidence drops your score under Demonstration of Core Competencies.
